Crystalline - The process

Dramatic crystals are formed using highly specialized glazes with a large percentage of zinc oxide and a firing schedule that involves holding temperatures for sometimes hours allowing the crystals to form

Crystalline glazes are very fluid and runny requiring special preparation. Using a pedestal and tray to "catch" the glaze is required to prevent damage to the kiln shelf. After the firing the piece usually pops right off the pedestal but requires some cleanup on the foot to remove residual glaze.

Adding colorants to the glazes such as oxides of Cobalt, Copper, Iron, Nickel, and Manganese change the color and shape of the crystals for almost endless variation making each piece truly unique!
